January 23, 2006 =- bored?
So this site is getting boring, we have not updated it in a while. Like most band when you are in the recording studio you feel the whole world just stops and waits. Which of course is not the case.

Ollie Q has recorded many songs in the past 3 months, we are now starting to mix. This album will be pressed with a real glassmaster and if we are lucky even some vinyl will be made.

In addition we have finally purchased a new server which will be online in approx 2 weeks. So the speed of the site should greatly increase. (Many don't realize this site is runnin on a 233MHz laptop at the moment.)

The new site will have the first streams from the Golden Circle Family's "Radio O", thus an Ollie Q rocksteady radio. Where we will be playing sounds from the Dutch Ska, Roots, and Reggae and all the 2nd takes from Ollie Q. We plan broadcast only music which is offered directly from the artists to the listener. Which we have wanted to implement for sometime now but just did not have a server for it.

More things to come keep rockin'.

January 30, 2006 - New Server :)
Well if you see this then you are seeing the new server. So we will wait a few days so that the emails and everything is working before the next updates.

November 11, 2005 -Studio Time at last!
Studio Time at last!
We promised ourselves some time purely for recording and working on
new and 'old' material. Well, that's exactly where we are doing right now.
So apart from us having a mighty fine time at Studio Deep Six,
there's not much news at this time. Yet.

October 26, 2005 -Atak,

This weekend (friday) we'll be playing in Atak, Enschede. It's our last gig for the Popronde this year.
It's been a fairly hectic couple of weeks for us Ollies. We've been working through quite a lot of shows in Germany and Holland and we had some great times with an awfull lot of good people.
Like the men from ClubSKA, Radio Duisburg, with whom we did a radio-interview. Or this guy Leo in Eibergen who, out of the blue gave us a very special plant to take home as a souvenir from the woods.
Talking about unreal experiences...

We had two serious candidates for the "Ollie Q. & The Deep Six Fan Of The Month Oktober"competition, Ulla and Olli.
So far it looked like Olli is definitely favorite to become Fan Of The Month, according to all the guestbook- entries we received lately.
And who are we to argue with that? Look at him: He's got all the handsome qualities it takes te be a winner ain't he?
But still, there will allways be others. Maybe even more handsome, more devoted... Like this friendly young student in Boslust, Utrecht who was wearing a black Ollie Q. T- shirt and somehow knew most of our ollie-songs by heart.
Unfortunately, we don't know his name. If he might be choosen to become "Ollie Q. & The Deep Six Fan Of The Month Oktober", it's going to be hard to send him the "Ollie Q. Fan-Surprise Box" So, anyone who can tell us more about this young man, please let us know...

October 6, 2005 - One Ollie, two Ollie, three Ollie, more
Just like every month our Ollie Q. Street Team decides on who might be the lucky one to be chosen as the"Ollie Q. & The Deep Six Fan Of The Month"

For this month we allready have two serious candidates to join the competition.
First we got Ulla, a dedicated Olliefan our Street Team caught working in a drugstore somewhere in Nijmegen while she was scaring away customers with her copy of "Waking Up Dead"
But now we also have Olli (Yes, that's his real name!) from Osnabrück, also crazy about
Ollie Q. & The Deep Six.

Wondering who will end up to be "Ollie Q. & The Deep Six Fan Of The Month Oktober"? Ulla or Olli ?
Or do you know any other candidates our Ollie Q. Street Team needs to concider?
Let us know exactly what you think... write the book.

October 4, 2005 - Having Flys?
Well, "Times fun when you're having flys". Getting ready for a few more shows in Germany this weekend after just returning from the area this past Sunday.

Sometimes it is hard to tell reality from fiction and the more we travel the more unreal our experiences seem to be. Next week will be using "All terrein" vehicles and carrying a few weeks rations to get to the gig because we never know what awaits us. So without too much detail, because you would not believe it all even if we told the whole story. In fact we find it hard to believe ourselves. So let me talk about what we know is real.

On september 11 we play at the Easy Smokers Lounge in Rotterdam, which was probably our best gig in September, though WE played well at all gigs, but playing is just a portion of gigging. On September 23 our friend Tjeerd got to play with the dispicable 5 much more then he had expected in Maastricht and it was good. Last Sunday we got to play at WESTWERK, Osnabrück, a gig we had been waiting and waiting for,.. really excited. The show, the club and the people were great thanks to allska for making it possible. And thanks to the Keymaster that finally set us free Sunday morning ;). One more , thanks again Los Placebos for letting Rolfi play with us again.

You can never be too thankful these days. Because who knows who will have to save you next week.

August 27, 2005 - Happy Birthday Ollie Q
It must have been about a year ago that we decided to leave our former band behind to make a fresh start as Ollie Q. & The Deep Six.
I guess now we can celebrate our first anniversary and joyfully say: "Happy Birthday, Ollie!"

Allthough most of us allready played together all over this continent for a while, we more or less had to start from scrap as a band. And I believe we all feel that we have done what we expected ourselves to do: getting a solid act together on stage and at the same time work hard to create new songs and sounds.

'No Man Is An Island', and we know we wouldn't have achieved all this without the inspiration and help of our friends and relatives. Thanks to you all.

But things have only just begun for Ollie Q. & The Deep Six. Now that we've build this little spaceship, it's high time to move further and to explore new galaxies.

Ain't no stoppin us now.

August 12, 2005 - Ska bussiness is serious business
'Ska business is serious business', as Mr. Punchback sometimes likes to yell at the audience.
So after a short easy-does-it summer break it's high time again to move to the next level for us Ollies.
Which means expanding our ever growing arsenal of homemade ollie-songs and put them on record.
Yesterday we allready did some recording experiments on a few recent pieces. So if the results aren't too ugly, maybe Mr B. will put some excerpts of 'War Goes On', 'Big River Of Tears' or 'Crime & Punishment' online. Just to give you a taste. Who knows.
Untill that time I'm happy to inform you about the 2005 Popronde Sampler. If you lay your hand on that one, you just might find our very own 'Sweet Chopica' as one of the selected songs on this sampler.

June 02, 2005 - More news
More news, The Ollies played in Zwolle yesterday evening. For about an hour they demonstrated their brand of ska jazz on the cosy little square outside of Eureka. I believe someone made some photos. Perhaps we will get copies.

We need a "Press" photo for promotional material. Well at least that is what we were asked by the Popronde. Having difficulties to take time out from playing to let someone make a foto it took like three weeks to do it. So after the set in Zwolle we walked around the square in the dark with a bad digital camera and made some snap shots. Hopefully we will have one sharp enough to use but maybe not. SO if anyone has foto of us Ollies please send them to ollie because if these pictures don't work out the Popronde won't wait another 3 weeks!

May 29, 2005 - I am a street musician or beaten by a clock
I am a street musician
I play music for free or at most for hospitality.
Rewards are not what I seek.
Creating music is all that I need.

If I achieve peace in my mind I succeed.
I do not do it for greed.
I try teach those who will heed.

What I give to you it is from me.
With nothing hidden in between.

Just peace, love and harmony.

It was a very long week for some group members. Played a couple of nice sets and experienced some communication gaps. As it goes being human, sometimes life is too stressful and stress mixed with your own personal insecurities is a bad combination in a group situation.

In reality it just takes one person with a bit of negativity to dissolve a perfectly enjoyable evening out with friends (though that was not the case this evening). However, still, Mr. B. gets the prize this week for the most illogical overreactions to minor scheduling alterations. In other words, his schedule ended up being so full this past week that by Friday he was searching for every minute he could save, after loosing like 240 minutes on Thursday as he claims. But we tried to explain to him that you do not own minutes, you experience them, so you can not loose them.
present:

Lost time is never found again

Thursday we played at Locus 010 here in Rotterdam, which was very fun though a lot of work. The combination of good dub, reggae d j's and live music always makes for a good evening no matter what your mood is when you arrive.

The party continued into the early morning with the Togetha Brothers jamming out.

Saturday going to Leiden Brian was convinced that this evening would be his chance recover some of those minutes lost from the Locus gig. After seeing that we were playing even earlier in Leiden than expected Brian began planning his next four days to achieve optimal time effectiveness and get caught up with everything.

Little did he know that there was a sort festival setup on the podium and someone in the group had the choice upon arrival.

1. "play the drum set on the stage"
which is a bad choice because well, most people would agree different drum set sound different and play different.
2. "play your own drum set, but then the other band after you would have to play your kit as well"
which is a bad choice because sharing instruments often goes bad. (in our past experiences anyways)
Having to choose between two bad options they decide on number 2.

We should have known that this choice was comming because the promoter did enlighten a band member over the situation prior to the gig. But some of you may know this secret "Musicians are sometimes not very organized".

They choose option 2 because everytime our drummer has used another stage kit it has walked across the podium constantly to the point where it is almost not playable. The choice was made and the information remained confidential (well I guess whoever was around understood knew it).

Normally, small missed communications are not an issue with this group. We are usually (99% guaranteed) very laid back, to the point of being scarey. However with Mr. B. in minute saving mode all pieces of missed information were to become a hydrogen bomb for his agenda.

So having a good time, we enjoyed our drinks and the sites and sounds.

Time to play. I think we were setting up quite quickly because we are in top stage hand form. Thursday we had the pleasure of setting up the drum set three times. Playing a quick set of about an half hour. The set felt like it was just getting started.

Everyone being happy with the set, we were lucky enough to get to play another song, I believe because we had more time left. In the excitment we must have played faster I guess?

So we begin to break down the stage and Mr. B. sees the drum set not moving quick enough off the stage. So he inquires "Why aren't you breaking the kit down?" which receives the response "because the other group has to use it". So at this point you can imagine a giant mushroom cloud forming over Mr. B's aura. "No, If you want to have the kit in Rotterdam tomorrow it has to come now. Because I am the driver and i am saving minutes, and do you know how many minutes that will cost me?". That's right the old "I'm am the driver" veto blended with other jargen.

I don't know about you, but if I saw a pale skeleton with a mushroom cloud over his head I would have had the same response as the other Ollie's. "Okay we will pack up the kit". The group members know that Brian can be a "dick" sometimes and that there is nothing one can do about it because it comes with the bass. However the promoters had yet to experience the side effects from minute gathering.

The promoter tried to negotiate the drum set. Stating the agreements he had with members in the group over the drum set. As Mr. B. listens to the reasoning he pulls out his own logic. On why they should just set up the "other" kit.
  1. I am the driver and I am leaving
  2. It was a miscommunication but i have to leave, i am saving minutes you know, just set up the other kit.
  3. If we weren't wasting time talking about this, the drum set would already be set up.
  4. Setting up a drum set does not take that long.
  5. I don't have any drink tickets left and i just played a show and i am thirsty.
Childish but realistic. Mr. B. was also not aware that fresh drink were brought to the back of the stage. The promoters had an agreement with someone over the plan for the evening and Brian had an agreement over the plan for the evening (at least what he thought was his agreement, come to leiden and play). Who's plan is most important for future of civilization or even the evening. Earth is a very small part of the universe and people are a small part of earth. So probably either choice would not have affected the galaxy or the evening. And it didn't but it did cause alot of panic back stage or should i say side stage.

Needless to say, a drum set was played and now we are back in Rotterdam waiting to go to Zwolle.

This is a reminder that what you don't know can hurt you or even someone else!

People of the world share your information freely!

Sorry to anyone in Leiden who was offended by Mr. B. stressful reaction. And he reports that the minutes saved have come in very handy. Those minutes will probably be the thing that saves the evening in Zwolle.

May 10, 2005 - long time no write
Whew, long time no write. Well after a nasty strain of flu that lingered on in the band for months, affecting some members more than others, we have been quite busy trying to keep breathing.

Michiel has been working on some sound for a nice dutch poem with 3d graphics as well as training and performing on-stage sound effects for Hotel Modern, an international active theatre group.

Mr. B. was doing some work and playing around with the DANGERMEN

Frank V. has been mastering the long lost art of midi programming with only the GM midi sounds. Nobody can swing midi like Frank.

Frank D. has been enslaved by the queen, "for it is he and only he who can save the deteriorating dutch youth", which means many hours of work.

Marijn has been testing mouth pieces, learning more harmonic tunes and organizing what he can to maintain the group.

Marcel has been busy drumming and trying to come up with a solution to keep Michiels guitar part tied to his hi-hat in Monk-tiki.

Apart from those things we, "Ollie Q and the Deep Six" have been selected for the 2005 POPRONDE and from what i understand that means another Ollie Q number on compilation CD! We don't know what shows we will get the pleasure of playing but when we do know so will you.

The recording that should have taken place months ago during our flu season will be happening as soon as the queen sets Frank D free. However the delay has allowed us to write even more material. Soo that means more mp3's are on the way.

Pictures and maybe some audio from our recent shows in Essen and Siegen wil be online soon. Until that time take a look (click on the small photo at the right) at the great pictures Peter Kattannek took in Essen

Feb 07, 2005 - Vitamin P
After a healthy dose of vitamin P (vitamin Podium that is) all of our facial blemishes have miraculously disappeared.

The first trip to Germany as Ollie Q was like giant breath of fresh air after living a week in the sewer. You feel you are really alive and that what you are doing is being appreciated from this type of experience. Which is why playing live is so important to musicians and necessary as therapy for us Ollie's.

We knew from the evenings schedule that we would get to see Skin Ya Teet rock the house (which they did). So we decided we could not possibly drive back after the gig because we did not want to miss The Montesas and St. Petersburgh Ska Jazz Review. Thanks goes to St. PSJR and Johannes for giving us a place to sleep on such short notice.

The Hoeschbar was filled from the bashment to the attic with the sound of good music. The DJ's upstairs played nothing but great songs. I have never heard so many prime-cuts played one after another continuely for more the 7 hours straight! And if that was not enought Skin Ya Teet, Ollie Q, Montesas and St. PSJR in the basement!

Ollie Q played a straight set of all originals to a very enthousiatic group of music lovers, who made us very happy by singing along. And we thank you, everyone, the club, and Johannes Böing for giving us the opportunity. If you did not get a CD while you were there then come see us at the next gig in Essen or copy it from your friend. "Waking Up Dead" from Ollie Q + The Deep Six is out now!

Feb 01, 2005 - Like my momma says
Like my momma says "Brown sugar and black pepper don't go together.". So when your cooking up a recipe with such ingredients it takes a lot of mixing, the first final rush mix was already posted snail mail. In keeping with the true spirit of self produced music the songs on this disc are actually in the wrong order and one of the numbers is not the actual final version. So now that we have that in order the manufacturing process begins.

Jan 30, 2005 - What's up
New things, the first Ollie Q Demo CD is now really comming, we expect to have some copies available for the Dortmund gig.

Last night we played in Dordrecht at Bar Arina. Did you ever see the blues brothers? You know where they go and they play a kick ass set at the bar only to find out that they had drunken away their fee.

Well we played and were under the impression the everyone had a good time. After setting up the microphones, PA, and doing our own sound ourselves we took down all the microphones, wrapped the cables ourselves and put things away. In additon to hauling our own gear.

After all of that we find out that through out the evening those free beers that we were drinking, were not actually free!.

Meaning that we went home with less then what we started the evening with (ontkosten if you will).

Aside from that, it was prima and the atomosphere was fun, maybe next time we can bring our own beer ;)

Jan 25, 2005 - Spontaneous combustion
Highlight: MUSIC
Spontaneous combustion is a common problem one finds in space. Some lucky enough to witness this phenomenon are awestruck by the energy and unpredictability of it. When something so seemingly harmless as nothing becomes something else; and even more difficult to understand. Yet, its attractiveness grows with every change as we come to the realization that control is a myth. Those attending the boogje 1 Saturday know what I am talking about. RockHard , RockLoud and most important RockSteady.

Oct 31, 2004 - Happy Halloween
Happy Holloween! We are going to try to record a few new things this week. So hopefully we will have some more tracks to listen to next week. Thanks for all the input and help we have been receiving from everyone, things seem to really be moving along. As many of you know we are taking this month to work on new material and continue experimenting and testing our sound. So you can look forward to some new samples on the web with in the next weeks.

Have you heard Thelonious Monks CD "UNDERGROUND", extremely worth while.

And for some old news: on October 17th I had the pleasure of sitting in with DANGERMEN, for a not so pleasent reason. Arnoudt Pieters drummer from the Cords and Telefunk from Deventer(NL) who recently passed away was remebered on the fall day at the Burgerweeshuis in Deventer. DANGERMEN is presented on the 'Songs for the Silver Surfer' CD A tribute to Arnoudt Pieters, along with Bettie Serveert, Willard Grant Conspiracy and many more, and you can get it at Plato and other music stores. For more information check out VPRO. Proceeds from the album go to Arnoudts wife Simone and children.

Oct 20, 2004 - A BIG What's up
Whew, still smileing from last Saturday, I was having NYC flashbacks at the Boogje 1. The best atmosphere and good vibes, I can't wait to go back and just hang out. It's like being in the basement of Vera and CBGB's at the same time, right here in Rotterdam!.

Well our next publicized show is at Dizzy's, however we will be playing incognito at various venues in Holland in order avoid the anti-Ska-Jazz-mafia that has been attempting to stop us from spreading love, peace and good music. Programmers be warned: Booking Ollie Q could be the best risk you take this year.

New additions to the web:

We have a few photos from the Boogje 1 and the Podium check it out.

Also a 2 minute video from a crappy panasonic. A bit of jamming on tape at the Boogje. I have not had a chance to convert it to a more standard format (not sure what is standard with all the codecs these days), so the format is windows media (wmv). Which means you need Windows media player or a compatable viewer. check it out.
I hear Mac users are having problem viewing these file, sorry we are working on the problem.

In the new year we will begin Ollie Q's newsletter which you can NOW sign up to receive. This is no junk mail newsletter, you will receive maximum 4 messages a year, so go sign up.

Oct 08, 2004 - Engines are warm
Music is coming!, we are in the studio for the first single. After a push in the right direction by unseen forces we will be putting some sounds to disc next week! The universe smiles upon us.

As with everything the Deep Six does we can't stop there, we are planning to record alot and play alot, so we need some help from a digital sound junkie.

Since we plan to make a lot of recordings we are looking for a single person who can mix and master tracks, you will receive the wavs or aiff on CD which you will then mix and master with your own equipment and return to us. There are benifits to be received if you have the equipment, knowledge and artistry to do this task.

Enjoyment of Ska, Jazz and other forms of "Horn-y" music is a must, and bit of experience is also helpful;).

Oct 01, 2004 - Open the gates
Yee haw, the CIRCEL update has already happened and i just saw "Dukes of Hazards" last night, which means things are going better then expected. The site is online but still evolving. Some people say that the color in the top links don't match the background, we are trying to get that in order.

Anyways since you did not see the site yesterday, i will answer again what you asked:

"Who the hell is Ollie Q and the Deep Six? Is it some sort of spontaneous combustion?"
Well, How nice of you to ask again, No Ollie Q is not a sort of spontaneous combustion, it is a combustion catalyst among other things.

"Can i tell my mom about Ollie Q?"
You can tell your mom but we are not responsible for the repercussions and no we will not take you in if you have to leave home because of it.

"Really then,... what the hell is Ollie Q and the Deep?"
"Deep Six " you mean, Oh patience my friend, first you must come and "wash and wax" our bus, before you can really understand ... wax on, wax off. Years of suffering must be endured to understand an Ollie.

But let me explain, i mean, make an attempt to explain it to you once again.

Sep 30, 2004 - Calling all hands on deck
Welcome to the construction site of Ollie Q.
Trying desperately to get something together before the Oct 1... it will happen

Anyways this is our "KISS" website, (ie "Keep it simple stupid") and as you can tell that word "CIRCEL" in the top banner should be "CIRCLE" and when that changes you will know the website has changed. Because then the word Circle will be different. And we are different and different is good.
